Exterior Detailing

Exterior detailing in Marietta, from the corner of 2nd and Greene

Shine from the outside in. Two bucket hand wash, paint decontamination and wax at Iridescent Fine Detailing, from $115.

What road film does to paint

Bugs, tar and road grime do not sit on a car, they bond to it. A wash lifts the loose dirt and leaves the bonded film behind, which is why a car can be clean and still feel rough under your palm.

That film is what the decontamination step in the Shimmer detail is for. Before any wax goes on, Ben works the paint to remove minor bugs, tar and grime, so the protection lands on bare clearcoat instead of sealing the film in.

It also explains the one myth worth correcting. Exterior detailing is not an upscale car wash. It reaches the places a wash skips, the fender wells and door jambs, and it finishes with protection a drive-through never applies.

Shimmer, from the first bucket to the last coat of wax

Shimmer is the standard exterior detail, from $115 for a 2 Door Sport Coupe/Hatchback, and it runs 4 to 5 hours. It starts with a two bucket hand wash, so grit rinsed off the mitt never goes back onto the paint, then the wheels and tires get their own hand wash.

The fender wells are cleaned, scrubbed and dressed, and the tires get a no-sling dressing that stays on the rubber instead of spotting the paint behind it. After the decontamination come the door jambs, the exterior glass and the exhaust tips, and the whole car finishes in wax.

If your car already wears a ceramic coating, Shimmer adds a ceramic topper over it. The topper is for coated vehicles only. For everyone else, the same appointment can step up to an entry-level ceramic coating, which Ben describes as better than sealant or wax.

Add-ons, and how often to come back

Two add-ons sit beside Shimmer. Headlight Restoration polishes hazed lenses back to clarity in roughly 2 to 3 hours, and Engine Detailing degreases and cleans the engine bay and finishes it with a dressing. Heavy grease and oil are not removed, so call and tell Ben what you are looking at under the hood.

Ben recommends exterior detailing every 4 to 6 months, and sooner if the car spends its life outdoors or takes a lot of highway miles. A new car benefits as much as an old one, because the point is to keep the paint from getting damaged in the first place.

Light scratches and swirls can look better after polishing and waxing, but deeper ones need paint correction. If that is your car, start with the paint correction page. Complimentary pick-up and drop-off covers a 5-mile radius of the shop at 2nd and Greene, so you can leave the car with Ben and carry on with your day.
