Four Ceramic Coating Myths, Answered Plainly

Ceramic coating has built up a reputation that's a little ahead of the product. Some of it comes from marketing, some from friends who tell the story with the best parts turned up. A coating is a useful thing to have on your paint. It also isn't magic, and a car owner who knows the difference is the one who stays happy with it three years later. Here are the four myths we hear most, with straight answers.

Myth one: a coating makes paint scratch-proof

It doesn't. A ceramic coating is a hard, clear layer that adds resistance to light marring, which is the fine scratching that comes from washing and wiping. It acts as a sacrificial layer, taking the small abrasions that would otherwise land on your clear coat. That's useful. It's not armor.

A key scrape, a shopping cart, a rock thrown by a gravel truck or a branch on a back road will still mark a coated car. If what you want is protection from rock chips, the product built for that is paint protection film, and the two can be used together. A coating is about gloss, slickness, and making the paint easier to care for.

Myth two: you never have to wash it again

The coating is hydrophobic, meaning water beads up and rolls off, and it takes loose dirt along for the ride. That makes the car easier to clean and slower to look dirty. It doesn't make the car self-cleaning. Road film, pollen, bird droppings and bugs still collect, and some of it bonds to the surface if it sits.

This is why every ceramic coating Iridescent Fine Detailing installs comes with scheduled maintenance washes at a specialty price, and why the Aqua Tek Singular 6 Year and Freestyle 2 Year packages both include a discounted first wash two to four weeks after application. Washing a coated car is easier and faster, and it's still washing. Use a gentle method and clean mitts, because the coating protects the paint but you can still put scratches into the coating itself.

Myth three: all coatings are the same

Walk through any auto parts aisle and you'll find bottles labeled ceramic at very different prices. The label doesn't tell you much. Products differ in formulation, in how they're meant to be applied, and in how long they're designed to last. How the surface is prepared and how carefully the coating is applied matter just as much as what's in the bottle.

The shop uses Aqua Tek coatings and is an authorized Aqua Tek installer, with ceramic coating training from the Elite Detailer Academy. The packages are named for their intended life: Singular 6 Year starting at $775, and Freestyle 2 Year starting at $450. The Freestyle package can be upgraded to cover all surfaces, meaning paint, glass, trim and wheels, for $725. These are starting prices for a 2 Door Sport Coupe or Hatchback. The shop's quote form lists three more options, HyperClean Uno 1 Year, Aqua Tek Select 2 Year and Aqua Tek GT 4 Year, so there's a range to match budget and how long you plan to keep the car.

Myth four: a coating is permanent

No coating lasts forever. A ceramic coating is semi-permanent, which means it bonds to the paint and stays for years, and it still wears down over time. How quickly depends on the product, how well it was applied, how often the car is washed and what it's exposed to. A garage-kept car on gentle washes will outlast a daily driver parked outside under trees.

The honest sign that a coating is working is how water behaves. When rain or a rinse beads up and sheets off, the coating is doing its job. When water starts to lie flat and cling, it's wearing, and that's a good time to bring the car in for a look. The shop can assess a damaged or worn coating and tell you whether a spot repair makes sense or a larger area needs recoating.

What a coating does well

With the myths cleared away, here is the real list of what you get:

  • Water beading and easier cleanup, because dirt has less to grab onto.
  • A deeper, glossier look in the color you already have. A coating enhances your paint and doesn't change its color.
  • A hard layer that takes the minor wear before your clear coat does.
  • Resistance to the things that dull paint over time, like UV exposure, bird droppings and tree sap, as long as you clean them off promptly.

One more thing before you book

Every coating package at the shop requires a paint correction or polish appointment first, because the coating locks in whatever is on the paint underneath. If the paint has swirls, the coating won't fix them. It's worth planning for that step, in both time and budget, so the coating goes onto paint that's worth keeping.
